Former Michigan coach Bo Schembechler is on a short list of candidates to replace fired Chicago Bear coach Mike Ditka, according to a broadcast report.
WMAQ-TV in Chicago reported Tuesday night that a confidant of Schembechler’s called the Bears about the opening and the team returned the call.
The station said others on the list include Washington Redskin assistant coach Richie Petitbon, a former player who is widely reported to be a leading candidate; Dallas Cowboy defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt; Bear offensive coordinator Greg Landry and New York Jet defensive coordinator Pete Carroll.
The Philadelphia Eagles put Andre Waters on their practice squad, and Coach Rich Kotite indicated he will activate the strong safety for Sunday’s NFC playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Waters, one of the NFL’s hardest hitters and leading tacklers during his nine-year career, has been sidelined since Oct. 18 because of a broken fibula and torn ligaments in his left leg.
Waters won’t start and would be used in situations such as short yardage and goal-line formations.
Kotite said he wasn’t sure if offensive lineman Mike Schad, who has been nursing a groin injury for two weeks, will be ready.
