Garrett Expected to Be Named Athletic Director at USC

After the final round of interviews conducted Thursday, indications are that Mike Garrett will be named athletic director at USC.

USC President Steven Sample interviewed Garrett and USC basketball Coach George Raveling on Thursday, but sources say that Sample is leaning toward Garrett.

Garrett is associate athletic director at the school and was believed, when he was hired in 1990, to be the hand-picked successor to the outgoing Mike McGee.

Raveling, who is in his seventh season as basketball coach, has said he does not want to give up coaching for an administrative position, although he would consider doing both. However, sources say that Sample would not allow Raveling to continue coaching.

Barring a last-minute change of heart by Sample, an announcement of Garrett’s appointment is expected soon.

Garrett, who won the 1965 Heisman Trophy as a USC running back, will replace McGee, who had been athletic director since 1984. McGee announced Nov. 30 that he was leaving to take a similar position at the University of South Carolina.
