Teacher Pay Cuts
The Times has a lot of nerve to ask me and 32,000-plus other Los Angeles Unified School District teachers to “resoundingly approve” Assembly Speaker Willie Brown’s 10% pay cut proposal for two years, as suggested in your editorial, “A Way to Head Off Disaster” (Feb. 23).
You are, in effect, asking me to make an $8,000-plus contribution (based on my current salary) to the children and schools of Los Angeles for the next two years. Why don’t you have the nerve to ask all Los Angeles citizens making over $29,000 (a beginning teacher’s salary) to “resoundingly endorse” and contribute 10% of their pay for the next two years to the children and schools of Los Angeles?
