Dr. Sidney B. Brownsberger; Ophthalmologist

A memorial service will be held next month for Dr. Sidney Burton Brownsberger, a longtime Glendale ophthalmologist. He was 91.
Brownsberger died Feb. 19 at his Glendale home of complications of a stroke, said his daughter-in-law, Susan C. Brownsberger of Watertown, Mass.
Born in Asheville, N.C., he graduated from the College of Medical Evangelists, now called Loma Linda University Medical School, in 1925. Following an internship and residency at Los Angeles County Hospital, Brownsberger studied in Edinburgh, Scotland, to obtain a British medical license.
He and his wife, Claire, later served five years as medical missionaries in India. Brownsberger returned to the United States in 1933, completed a residency in ophthalmology at Los Angeles County Hospital and established his practice in Los Angeles. During World War II, he served as an eye surgeon in the Army.
After he was discharged, Brownsberger returned to his practice, which he later moved to Glendale. He was on the staff and a consultant in ophthalmology at Glendale Adventist Medical Center and White Memorial Medical Center.
Brownsberger also was a senior attending physician at Los Angeles County Hospital and a clinical professor in ophthalmology at Loma Linda University Medical School. He retired in 1985 at the age of 83.
Brownsberger is survived by his son, Dr. Carl N. Brownsberger of Watertown, Mass.; his daughter, Mary B. Young of Etna, N.H.; four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. His wife died in 1987.
The memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. March 13 at Glendale Seventh-day Adventist Church, 610 E. California Ave. Kiefer & Eyerick Mortuary in Glendale is handling the arrangements.
