LOS ANGELES : 25-Cent Red Line Fare Extended Another Month

In hopes of winning more riders, transit officials Thursday approved an extension of the 25-cent fare for the Metro Red Line to continue until the end of March.
The 25-cent fare was initially slated to last through Feb. 28. Beginning March 1, officials had planned to charge $1.10--or the same fare charged on city buses and the Blue Line. But on Thursday transit officials decided to preserve the discount fare on the city’s new subway for one more month.
“Red Line passengers are clearly attracted by the low fare, which is affording us the opportunity to showcase the system and indoctrinate people to its use as a downtown circulator and a distribution connection to the Metrolink and Blue Line systems,” said Mayor Tom Bradley in a statement.
In the days immediately after the month-old subway opened, about 25,000 people boarded it daily. Officials say daily ridership is now about 14,000 on weekdays and 20,000 on weekends.
