Central Florida, which began its football program 14 years ago, announced plans to move up to NCAA Division I-A level in 1996.
“Just as a great city needs a great university, a big-league city like Orlando should have a big-league college football program,” school president John Hitt said.
The Knighs have competed in Division I-AA since 1990.
