Ukraine, Georgia Sign Friendship Pact

KIEV, Ukraine — Georgia and Ukraine signed a sweeping friendship treaty Tuesday and accused Russia of pursuing the interests of the defunct Soviet Union.
Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk, at a news conference with Georgian leader and former Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard A. Shevardnadze, denounced Moscow’s attitude on nuclear arms, the division of the disputed Black Sea Fleet and economic links.
He also accused Russia of preventing Georgia from settling a conflict with separatists in the Abkhazia region.
Kravchuk said Ukraine has no plans to provide weapons for Georgia. But he said Ukraine is well placed to act as an intermediary in Abkhazia, where Georgia accuses Russia of aiding separatists fighting for greater autonomy.
The treaty was among about 230 documents signed by the leaders of the two former Soviet republics during two days of talks.
