Upjohn Chairman Dies; Search for Successor Launched: Dr. Theodore Cooper--who guided the pharmaceutical company through restructurings, increased drug development and controversy about its sleeping aid Halcion--died of complications from bone marrow cancer. Cooper, a physician, was 64. He had been chairman and chief executive of the Kalamazoo, Mich.-based firm since 1987. Upjohn’s board of directors said Ley S. Smith, president and chief operating officer, will continue as acting chief executive while the board conducts a search for a permanent successor.
