UPI Offers Employee Buyout: United Press International is offering buyouts to unionized workers and will reorganize into six regional bureaus to boost revenue, company officials said. According to terms of the deal, the wire service is offering one week’s pay for each year served to about 200 employees as a way of encouraging early retirements or resignations, said UPI Vice President John R. Hayes. The reorganization, which will streamline the 86-year-old wire service’s operations still further, will probably lead to fewer bureaus, Hayes said. “We’re going to super-bureaus,” he said. The new regional centers will be in Washington, Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. According to Executive Editor Steve Geimann, UPI has 33 domestic bureaus and 44 overseas.
