LOS ANGELES : 10 Charged in Massive Workers’ Comp Fraud
- Share via
A Beverly Hills physician and nine other people charged in July with operating a massive, multimillion-dollar workers’ compensation fraud mill were indicted Wednesday by the county Grand Jury. The indictment, handed down against Dr. Mark Kaplan, his former wife, Polina Ioffe, and others allows the case to bypass a preliminary hearing and go directly to trial.
Superior Court Judge William R. Pounders set Kaplan’s bail at $15 million. Bail for the other defendants ranges from $5,000 to $2 million. Kaplan is accused of masterminding the ring, which investigators have said bilked insurance companies out of up to $50 million over four years by recruiting laid-off workers and persuading them to file false injury claims.
