1993 PREP PREVIEW: GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL : HUNTINGTON BEACH

Coach: Rocky Ciarelli (11th year).
1992: 28-8, 11-3 in Sunset League; reached Division II Southern Section semifinals, losing a five-game match to Torrance Bishop Montgomery; second in league.
Key returners: Andrea Atkinson, Sr., 5-9, outside hitter; Janna Crogan, Sr., 5-7, setter; Kim Watts, Jr., 5-7, outside hitter; Melissa Wendt, So., 6-2, outside hitter.
Key newcomers: Mindy Adams, Jr., 5-8 setter; Jill Myers, So., 5-10, middle blocker.
Outlook: Influx of returners doesn’t make up for the loss of outside hitter Deana Itow and middle blocker Vanessa Dahl, first-team all-league selections, both of whom are at Golden West College. But Ciarelli has four starters back, including second-team selections Wendt and Watts, to provide the needed firepower that made the Oilers the second-ranked Division II team in the Southern Section coaches’ preseason poll. What Ciarelli needs is his returners, nine in all, to step up their efforts. “I need them to fill in some holes,” he said. “They’re not just role players anymore.”
