China Goes Buggy in Fight for Games

BEIJING — China on Saturday reported success in a massive fly-swatting campaign aimed at winning the 2000 Olympic Games for Beijing.
“To create conditions to apply to host the Olympics, the capital’s fly density has had a clear fall,” the Beijing Evening News headlined on its front page.
The newspaper quoted the Leading Small Group on a No-Fly City as saying there had been a clear decline in the density of flies and a corresponding decrease in the rate of contagious diseases.
In the last two years, Beijing has built 1,991 public toilets and supplied 20,000 covered garbage containers in its campaign to clean up the city and win the Games.
The International Olympic Committee will decide Thursday on the site for the Games.
