Brethren Christian 7, Fillmore 6--Mike Lastrina made the game’s biggest defensive play to preserve the nonleague victory at Artesia High in Lakewood.
With 2:36 left, Fillmore elected to attempt a two-point conversion for the victory. Lastrina grabbed the Flames’ quarterback Adam Perez by the leg, forcing a desperation shovel pass that went untouched in the end zone.
Fillmore had reduced the lead to one on Rick Vermillion’s 26-yard touchdown run.
Brethren Christian (1-1) scored its first touchdown of the season with 13 seconds left in the first quarter when Keith Washington ran in from the three. The 32-yard scoring drive was set up when Kevin Edwards recovered a fumble.
