Thai actress and recording star Mai Charoenpura and her sister will receive $60,000 to settle their claim that they were improperly detained and treated roughly three years ago by undercover officers from the LAPD.
The Los Angeles City Council approved the payment to the sisters, who had originally sought more than $9.7 million in damages.
Charoenpura--who has been described as the “Madonna of Thailand”--was staying at a Hollywood hotel room when the incident occurred. Police said they questioned her because she was registered under the name of a suspected heroin trafficker, according to a city attorney’s report on the settlement.
