NEWPORT BEACH — Dren Douglass scored six goals Saturday as Los Amigos defeated La Verne Bonita, 6-5, at Newport Harbor High to advance to the Division IV water polo finals.
Last season, Los Amigos defeated Bonita in the finals to win its first Southern Section title in any sport. Wednesday, the Lobos will go for their second when they play San Bernardino at 2 p.m. at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.
The Lobos had a 3-1 lead after the first half, but Bonita came back with two goals to open the third quarter and tie the score, 3-3.
Douglass scored on a penalty shot, then on a backhander with a second left in the third quarter to give Los Amigos a 5-3 lead.
The Lobos held a two-goal advantage until Tommy Cho scored for Bonita with 1:09 left.
Los Amigos goalie David Breihan stopped a point blank shot with seconds remaining to finish the victory.
