Girl Dies When Car Rolls Over 5 Times

A car carrying six teen-age girls on their way to a slumber party cartwheeled five times through rush-hour traffic, killing a 16-year-old passenger and critically injuring another, authorities said.

A witness said the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when she swerved right and then left. The car cartwheeled through the median, landed on its roof and slid through two lanes of oncoming rush-hour traffic.

The accident occurred about 5 p.m. Friday near Concord, 24 miles northeast of San Francisco.

The Contra Costa County Coroner’s office identified the dead girl as Vanessa Risso of Pittsburg.

The 17-year-old driver was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where she was listed in serious but stable condition with a skull fracture.

A 16-year-old girl was at John Muir in critical condition. Three 17-year-old victims were taken to Mt. Diablo Hospital. One was listed in fair condition, the other in good condition, and a third was treated and released Friday night.
