OUTLOOK

Gaunt waited patiently for this opportunity, serving as an assistant to former Coach Jeff Zippi the last six seasons. He takes the reins of a program that is struggling. Gaunt, however, is optimistic the Eagles will rebound from two consecutive disappointing seasons in which they were 7-36. “We should win our share of games,” Gaunt said. “We lost some very good defensive outfielders, but we still should be strong on defense.” Gaunt believes Watts is among the league’s best catchers. He has a strong arm and is sound defensively. Bishop and Davenport are being counted on to provide a standout double-play combination. Biniasz showed promise last season and is expected to battle for the starting job at third base. Pitching is not expected to be among the Eagles’ strengths. “We’re very, very short on pitching,” Gaunt said. “We’re looking at a lot of people.” Gaunt hopes Jeff Jennings can help on the pitching front. Jennings has pitching experience, but he is better suited to contribute in the outfield.
