Berganio Fires 68 to Lead Field in U.S. Open Qualifying

Five area players moved a step closer to earning berths in the U.S. Open field during a local qualifying tournament Monday at Saticoy Country Club in Camarillo.
Alemany High graduate David Berganio, a two-time U.S. Public Links champion, took medalist honors with a four-under-par 68. Also clearing the first step of qualification were Rio Mesa High graduate Lawrence O’Neil (70), and professionals Ron Hinds of Westlake Village (71), Tom Stankowski of Ventura (71) and Mark Singer of Simi Valley (72).
Ross Fulgentis of Westlake High shot 71-76--147 to finish in a tie for 21st place in the Ping Phoenix Junior Championships at the Karsten Golf Course at Arizona State last weekend.
Fulgentis finished 11 shots behind boys’ champion Charley Hoffman of Poway, Calif., who shot a 65 in the second round. Scott Golditch of Taft finished in an eight-way tie for 37th at 150. Two-time City Section champion Darren Angel of Granada Hills struggled to a tie for 45th at 151.
Allison Wilson of Grant shot 82-80--162 to finish 18th in the girls’ competition.
Miscellany
Physical examinations for athletes in all sports will be offered at Reseda High from 8 a.m. till noon June 4 in the boys’ gym. The cost is $15.
