Highlights

After winning only one of its first four games, Rancho Alamitos rebounded to reach its second consecutive Southern Section Division VII title game. The Vaqueros finished third in league, losing to Los Amigos and league champion Kennedy. But led by the running of Kevin Allen and the passing of John Frank, the Vaqueros defeated Troy, Baldwin Park Sierra Vista and Arroyo Grande before losing to Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, 29-17, in the final. Allen, who had run for 640 yards in his first three playoff games, was held to minus-10 yards in 11 carries against Mira Costa. Frank set a school record for touchdown passes in one season (21) and is already second on the school’s career yardage list with 1,957 after his sophomore season. Frank threw five of his six playoff touchdown passes to junior Jeff Turbarg, who was hurt much of the season and had only 10 receptions. Frank was given time to throw thanks to a massive offensive line that averaged more than 250 pounds. Tackle Jeremiah Ross, who went to Fresno State on a scholarship, anchored the line. Kennedy swept through the league season undefeated, won its first two playoff games by a combined score of 56-7, and reached the semifinals before losing to Mira Costa, 23-19. Quarterback Chris Clark (1,239 yards, nine touchdowns), running back Charlie Marino (882 yards, 15 touchdowns) and wide receiver/kick returner Wesley Morris led the Fighting Irish attack. Los Amigos, led by first-year Coach Steve Bolton, linebacker/fullback Junior Leofa and quarterback Ape Tuato, finished second in league and lost to Arroyo Grande, 21-13, in the first round of the playoffs. In one of the season’s best games, Los Amigos defeated Rancho Alamitos, 14-12, on a late pass from Tuato to a stumbling Noah Tagatauli, who regained his balance and ran 56 yards for a touchdown. Pacifica, led by quarterback Jeff DePippo (602 yards rushing, 12 touchdowns) and tailback Damien Cook (794 yards, eight touchdowns) finished 4-3 in league. Bolsa Grande won only three games but had the county’s passing yardage leader in Brian Baughman (2,266).
