Couple Die in Idaho Train Collision

A retired Los Angeles police detective from Granada Hills and his wife died when their motor home was struck by a freight train in southwestern Idaho, authorities and relatives said Monday.

Romel A. Carnevale, 61, and his wife, Anna, 45, were hit Saturday morning when they pulled out of a rest stop on U.S. 95, six miles south of Weiser, Ida., and into the path of a freight train carrying hazardous materials, according to Idaho state police.

The train was traveling 66 m.p.h. at the time of impact, police said. However, no one on the train was injured and the hazardous material, which police did not identify, was contained in the freight cars, police said.

Romel Carnevale, a former detective who spent 32 years with the department, was on vacation with his wife at the time of the accident, according to his son Steve Carnevale.
