NORWALK : Torres Calls for Closure of Jet Fuel Storage Depot
- Share via
Rep. Esteban E. Torres (D-Pico Rivera) has called on the secretary of defense to close a jet fuel storage depot in Norwalk, saying the facility is no longer necessary.
“The Norwalk Tank Farm--a facility with a capacity to store 36 million gallons of highly toxic jet fuel--has outlived its usefulness,” Torres wrote in a letter to Defense Secretary William Perry.
Torres said the Defense Department should consolidate its operations and begin storing the fuel at its production site in the San Pedro area or at bases where the fuel is used. He added that the Defense Department has conceded that the tank farm is leaking toxic chemicals.
“For the people I represent, the Norwalk Tank Farm is more than a costly relic--it is a source of fear and danger,” Torres wrote.
