A WALK ACROSS FRANCE by Miles Morland (Fawcett/Columbine: $10; 238 pp.). At 45, Morland dealt with his midlife crisis by giving up a lucrative job in international finance and making a 553-kilometer trek across France with his long-suffering wife. As they hike from Gruissan Plage (near Narbonne) on the Mediterranean to Capbreton (near Bayonne) on the Atlantic, Morland savors the traditional recipes and life style of Southern France, and endures the tasteless food and “boutiquified” communities that are replacing them. His expanded journal offers an agreeable armchair journey.
