USTA ROUNDUP : Fountain Valley Team Wins Tennis Title

Fountain Valley defeated a team representing Southern states to win the U.S. Tennis Assn. women’s team title Sunday at Nevada Las Vegas.
Fountain Valley, representing Southern California, defeated Southern, 2-1.
The Fountain Valley men’s team lost the title match to Texas, 2-1. Dexter MacBride and former UC Irvine player Bruce Man Son Hing defeated Colin Hiu and Larry Pascal, 6-3, 6-4. Fountain Valley’s No. 1 doubles team of Kent Seton and Doug Iesenman had match point in a tiebreaker in the third set but lost to Mitch Michulan and Johan Svensson, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6).

The U.S. Tennis Assn. national seniors hardcourt championships in the women’s 65 and 75 divisions begin today and continue through Saturday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
Doris Clark of Laguna Beach is top-seeded in the 65 singles, followed by Louise Owen of Evansville, Ind. Dodo Cheney of Santa Monica is seeded first in the 75s with Alice Beckenbach of Los Angeles second.
Louise Harper of La Jolla and Owen are top-seeded in the 65 doubles. Cheney and Pat Stuhler of Brielle, N.J., are seeded first in the 75 doubles.
Play begins at 10:30 a.m. today. The Marriott Hotel Tennis Club at Fashion Island will be the secondary site for some of the early matches. Semifinals will be played Friday, with the finals Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
