SANTA MONICA : Allred Loses Suit Against L.A. in Her Father’s Death

Feminist attorney Gloria Allred lost a personal battle Wednesday when a Santa Monica jury ruled against her lawsuit alleging that incompetence by Los Angeles paramedics led to the death of her father, Morris Bloom.

The jury voted 10 to 2 in favor of the paramedics after 2 1/2 hours of deliberation after a three-week trial.

“I don’t think it (the suit) was frivolous,” said Deputy City Atty. Bob Pulone. “I firmly believe if Ms. Allred had known then what she does now” she would not have filed the suit.

Allred had alleged that paramedics were negligent when transporting her father, 89, from his Pacific Palisades home on Nov. 17, 1991. The suit said paramedics left Bloom on a gurney in front of the home, failing to notice eating and breathing tubes in his stomach and throat.

He died 18 days later in Santa Monica Hospital, which was also named in the suit. Allred had sought unspecified damages from the defendants.

Allred’s attorney, Richard L. Knickerbocker, said he is considering an appeal.
