VAN NUYS — A fire that began in the stairwell of an office building Sunday night damaged a familiar San Fernando Valley high-rise, firefighters said.
Called at 8:20 p.m. to the Valley Federal complex in the 6800 block of Van Nuys Boulevard, firefighters were confronted with intense smoke and discovered that the blaze had spread to the bank’s multistory tower, firefighters said.
The flames licked at the second and third floors of the building, radio reports indicated, before it was knocked down at 9:03 p.m. Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis said 65 firefighters from 13 engine companies were on hand.
No damage report was available. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.
