Obituaries : Neil F. Underwood; Farming Family Descendant

Neil F. Underwood, 73, a longtime Camarillo resident and descendant of one of Ventura County’s original farming families, died Saturday after a long illness. He was 73.
Underwood grew lemons and other crops in the Camarillo area until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, which was founded by his great grandparents, John and Rebecca Mahan, who settled in Camarillo in the late 1860s.
He also was an active member in the Camarillo Lions Club and in the Southern California Yachting Assn. He served as commodore of the Channel Islands Yacht Club in Oxnard in 1987.
Underwood is survived by his wife, Norma; his brother, Richard of Somis; and three daughters, a son and nine grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary.
