NEWBURY PARK : 3 Teen-Agers Ordered Detained in Shooting
- Share via
A Ventura County judge Tuesday ordered juvenile authorities to detain three teen-agers accused of firing at least 30 bullets into a house during a drive-by shooting that injured a pregnant Newbury Park woman.
The three, ages 16 and 17, denied charges of assault with a firearm and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.
The woman suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at a local hospital, Deputy Dist. Atty. Kim G. Gibbons said. The prosecutor described the shooting as a case of mistaken identity.
He said the suspects sprayed the wrong house with gunfire as they attempted to retaliate for an earlier drive-by attack.
Two of the defendants fired handguns, Gibbons said, while the third was the driver.
They will face a hearing Dec. 20 during which Superior Court Judge Steven Z. Perren is expected to determine whether they should be tried as adults, which the district attorney’s office has recommended.
