JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — The African National Congress reacted with outrage Friday to reports a secret amnesty was granted to the former white government’s police minister and 3,500 officers for apartheid-era crimes against blacks.
The former police minister, Adriaan Vlok, was granted amnesty for his alleged role in the bombing of the South African Council of Churches headquarters in 1988, the South African Press Assn. reported.
It said former defense minister Gen. Magnus Malan and former police commander Gen. Johan van der Merwe were also granted amnesty.
