A new “flyover” connector ramp linking the northbound Costa Mesa Freeway with the northbound Santa Ana Freeway is scheduled to open at 6 a.m. today, in time for early morning commuters.
“This new connector and the improved signing will go a long way to improve traffic flow” on the Costa Mesa Freeway, said Brent Felker, a director with the California Department of Transportation. “I think drivers will notice immediate improvements.”
The old connector, which was closed at 9 p.m. Thursday, had a capacity of about 5,400 cars per hour. The new connector will accommodate twice as many cars.
By next month, Caltrans expects to complete work on two other Costa Mesa Freeway connector projects, Felker said. These projects are the northbound transition to the southbound Santa Ana Freeway and the southbound transition to the southbound Santa Ana Freeway.
The total cost of the new interchange system between the two freeways is $161 million.
