NHL ROUNDUP : Hull’s Overtime Goal Gives Blues 5-4 Victory
- Share via
Brett Hull scored 3:32 into overtime, lifting the St. Louis Blues to a 5-4 victory over the Jets on Thursday night at Winnipeg and spurring disgruntled fans to throw soft-drink containers onto the ice.
Many in the crowd of 13,611 were incensed at what they saw as questionable officiating by referee Stephen Walkom. In overtime, fans got angry when officials failed to call a penalty on Hull after he launched an attack on Teemu Selanne.
Blue defenseman Al McInnis suffered a separated shoulder in a first-period collision with Selanne.
New Jersey 5, Quebec 4--Stephane Richer’s second goal of the game with 3:46 to play lifted the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J., ending the Nordiques’ five-game winning streak.
The Nordiques’ loss leaves the Pittsburgh Penguins as the league’s lone undefeated team.
San Jose 2, Dallas 1--Sandis Ozolinsh’s goal with 7:53 to play at Dallas sent the Sharks to their fifth consecutive victory.
Montreal 1, Florida 1--John Vanbiesbrouck had 22 saves at Miami to help the Panthers keep the Canadiens winless in Florida. Montreal is 0-3-1 on the road against Tampa Bay and 0-1-2 at Miami.
Buffalo 1, Washington 0--Dominik Hasek stopped 33 shots and Dale Hawerchuk scored a second-period power-play goal at Landover, Md.
Hasek, who shared the NHL lead with seven shutouts last season, preserved his first this year with a sprawling save on a close-in backhand shot by Pat Peake with 5:30 to play.
N.Y. Islanders 5, Philadelphia 4--Ray Ferraro’s second goal of the game, 1:47 into overtime, lifted the Islanders at Philadelphia.
Ferraro took a drop pass from Benoit Hogue and wristed a shot that hit Philadelphia’s Garry Galley in the glove and bounced between the pads of goalie Dominic Roussel.
The loss spoiled a big night for Josef Beranek of the Flyers, who scored three goals.
N.Y. Rangers 3, Tampa Bay 3--The struggling Rangers, losing a lead for the third time in six home games, gave up a shorthanded goal to Marc Bureau late in the second period at New York.
The Stanley Cup champions, 2-5-1 in their first eight games of the abbreviated 48-game season, held a 3-2 lead on Alexei Kovalev’s second goal of the night before Bureau scored with 3:01 to play in the second period.
Boston 6, Ottawa 4--Ray Bourque and Bryan Smolinski each scored twice at Boston and were among four Bruins who scored their first goals of the season.
Rookie Blaine Lacher stopped 17 shots and earned his fourth victory, despite giving up as many goals as he did in his first four games combined. Don Beaupre made 38 saves, and Alexei Yashin, Alexandre Daigle and Pavol Demitra each had a goal and an assist for the Senators (0-5-2), the NHL’s only winless team.
