Subway Tunnel Worker Injured

A Sherman Oaks construction worker was critically injured Saturday while working on a subway tunnel under Hollywood Boulevard, authorities said.

Greg Dobar, 30, was in critical condition at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center where part of his right leg was amputated.

“They were not able to save the leg,” said hospital spokeswoman Adelaida De La Cerda.

Dobar was working on a Red Line tunnel, 110 feet below Hollywood Boulevard in the 4700 block, when the accident occurred, said Metropolitan Transit Authority spokeswoman Clara Potes-Fellow. He was cleaning a large cement mixer about 8 a.m. when the machine was somehow turned on.

Mixing blades sliced through Dobar’s right leg just above the knee and through the thigh, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Dobar was conscious and talking but showed signs of shock as firefighters and MTA workers spent 20 minutes extricating him, Humphrey said.

He was loaded onto a stretcher, hoisted from the tunnel by a crane and rushed to the medical center where a trauma team waited, Humphrey said.
