BREA — A truck driver who pulled to the shoulder of the Orange Freeway to change a tire Friday was struck and killed by a pickup truck, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Raoul Camarena, 45, had parked on the side of Orange Freeway near Lambert Road to change a rear tire of his big rig when a motorist heading north swerved into him, CHP Officer Ron Davenport said.
The driver, who was not cited, told detectives he had fallen asleep at the wheel. When he realized that his truck was drifting to the right, he slammed on the brakes but it was too late, Davenport said.
The investigation is continuing.
