UC IRVINE
Romney Elected to the Academy
A. Kimball Romney, a research professor of social sciences and anthropology at UC Irvine, recently became a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Election to the academy is considered one of the highest honors given to an American scientist or engineer.
Romney, a specialist in cognitive anthropology, came to UCI in 1968.
His research involves “cultural consensus analysis” focusing on the exchange of information between anthropologists and their study subjects.

Ginex to Be President of Student Officers
Lori Ginex, a political science and English major, will serve as president of the student officers for the 1995-96 academic year at Orange Coast College.
Romulo Rivera, also a political science major, is the new vice president; and Fernando J. Sanchez, an architecture major, is the business manager.

GOLDEN WEST
Classes Offered in Youth Etiquette
Instruction in manners and social graces will be offered at Golden West College this summer as part of the College for Kids program.
The “Etiquette and Manners for Preteens” workshop will teach boys and girls ages 7 to 11 how to make introductions, express common courtesies and write thank-you notes.
There will also be an emphasis on party and table manners.
The workshop will meet from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturdays, July 8, 15, 22 and 29. The fee is $29.
For boys and girls ages 4 to 6, the college will offer a “Little White Gloves” workshop focusing on greetings, introductions, table manners and thoughtfulness.
The class will be from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Saturdays, July 8 to 29. The fee is $27.

Beechers Named Outstanding Citizens
Charles A. and Betty Jean Beecher were named Outstanding Citizens of 1995 at Orange Coast College’s commencement on May 26.
The pair have been residents of Costa Mesa since 1943 and are longtime supporters of the local college.
Both have served on the college’s Citizens Advisory Committee and are lifetime members of the Friends of the Orange Coast College Library.
The Beechers established a scholarship fund for the school in 1970 after one of their three children, Bruce, died in a motorcycle accident.
Their son was in his second semester at the Costa Mesa college when the accident occurred.
