“If a City Council member isn’t safe, who is?”
The question, posed by Long Beach City Councilwoman Doris Topsy-Elvord during Tuesday’s council meeting, was more than rhetorical. When she came home from vacation Sunday evening, Topsy-Elvord found that her house had been shot up.
Police believe the bullets--at least three--that ripped through the councilwoman’s house on Olive Avenue might have been strays from gang warfare, said Officer Margarita DeWitt. Several other shots hit parked cars and nearby houses.
“She [Topsy-Elvord] just lives in the midst of a very troubled area,” DeWitt said.
