Countywide : Computer Users Can Access Library

Residents now can access the 27-branch Orange County Public Library system with a computer and a new 900 number.
The system, which began July 10, provides access to the library through home and office computers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The cost to use the 900 number is 50 cents a minute up to a maximum of $50 (1 hour and 40 minutes).
“We are very excited about this opportunity to provide high-tech access to library services in an innovative manner,” County Librarian John M. Adams said. “This dial-in system will allow our users to tap into library resources in a state-of-the-art manner, and will also generate some badly needed income for the library.”
If used to full capacity, the 900 number could generate more than $500,000 a year, officials say.
To access the system, called OC/EDGE (Electronic Data Global Entry), a user needs a personal computer, a modem with a baud rate up to 14,400, communications software with specific settings and capable of VT100 emulation.
