LSI Logic to Build Plant in Oregon: The development in Gresham planned by Milpitas, Calif.-based LSI Logic Corp. would cost $4 billion, making it the most expensive manufacturing complex in the computer chip industry, the Oregonian newspaper reported. The factories would be built over 15 years and would eventually employ 2,000 people, the paper said, quoting from the company’s request for a tax break. If Multnomah County commissioners approve the request next month, LSI would save $113 million in property taxes. LSI is the second chip maker to ask county commissioners for a tax break under an abatement program adopted last spring. The possibility of a tax break persuaded LSI’s top management to build in Gresham instead of in Texas.
