From Times Wire Reports
The American ambassador and the U.S. commander in Japan apologized for the alleged rape of a schoolgirl on Okinawa by three U.S. servicemen. Ambassador Walter Mondale and Lt. Gen. Richard B. Myers met with Gov. Masahide Ota of Okinawa to express their “sincere apologies for the suffering this crime has brought to the child, her family and the people of Okinawa prefecture.” The Sept. 4 attack on the 12-year-old Okinawan has set off renewed calls to scrap an agreement that grants special legal status to U.S. military personnel in Japan.
