San Fernando Valley : RECAPTURING FORMER GLORY

More than $12,000 has been raised for restoration of the El Portal Theatre, leaving about $1.49 million more to go to fully recapture its Depression-era stature.
The funds were raised at a “builder’s bash” Saturday that drew 350 visitors to the three-venue theater center in North Hollywood, said Bob Caine, managing director of the Actors Alley performance company.
But Actors Alley is still awaiting more than $1 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency funds to jump-start construction at the earthquake-ravaged silent-movie house. Caine said construction on the 350-seat Pavilion Center and the 99-seat Circle Forum should begin in January if FEMA funds come through. Restoration could be complete by late next year.
