NEWPORT BEACH — Bachy Gonzalez broke a 23-year-old single-season rushing mark and John Liebengood became the winningest coach in Estancia history as the Eagles pounded Laguna Beach, 47-0, in a Pacific Coast League game Friday at Newport Harbor High.
Gonzalez, who rushed for 183 yards in 27 carries, surpassed Dan Princeotto’s total of 1,173 yards set in 1972. Gonzalez gained 1,197 this season. The victory was the 43rd for Liebengood at Estancia.
The Eagles (6-4, 2-3), who are eligible for an at-large berth, also set a single-season scoring record with 268 points, 28 more than the 1970 team.
Estancia scored on its first four possessions and led, 34-0, at the half.
Chris Felix scored on a 21-yard run on the Eagles’ opening drive and Gonzalez began the Eagles’ 27-point second quarter when he scored on a one-yard plunge on Estancia’s next possession.
Tanielu then hauled in a 54-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Perry for a 21-0 lead.
Frough Jahid’s 53-yard punt return put the Eagles up, 27-0, and Gonzalez set the team scoring record when he ran in from 10 yards later in the second quarter.
Gonzalez added another touchdown run in the third quarter and Felix capped the scoring with a 48-yard run in the fourth.
