Luring Businesses to Town Is City’s Goal

City officials plan to spend a good bit of their energy in 1996 luring developers to the newly rezoned Katella Avenue and other parts of the city.
“We want to do more than just service the traffic that Anaheim draws in,” Interim City Manager David L. Rudat said.
Major projects planned in Anaheim inspired Orange’s economic development staff, however, to push for the rezoning of Katella Avenue, formerly industrial, to allow more varied business operations.
The city has won welcome publicity in the past two months from events such as the filming of a Tom Hanks movie and the annual pre-Thanksgiving parade put on by the Mark & Brian radio duo, Mayor Joanne Coontz said.
City offices also will be reorganized in the year ahead as part of a revived efficiency plan that had stalled with the illness of City Manager David Dixon, who died last fall.
“We’re looking to reduce expenditures and maintain or even improve service levels,” Rudat said, adding that no layoffs are planned.
