SANTA ANA — A Los Angeles man was booked into the Orange County Jail on Wednesday on suspicion of vandalism and attempted murder of a police officer after he tried to run over an off-duty Compton officer, officials said.
The 1:47 a.m. incident began when the officer heard sounds outside his home in an unincorporated area near Santa Ana and saw 64-year-old Isaac Wilmer Campbell spray-painting a car, Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Wilkerson said.
“He ran outside and identified himself as a police officer,” Wilkerson said. “The suspect jumped into a vehicle and tried to run over the officer.”
Wilkerson said the officer fired one shot at Campbell’s 1985 Volvo, striking a headlight. He also called sheriff’s officials with the Volvo’s license plate number.
When Campbell arrived at his Los Angeles home, police took him into custody, Wilkerson said.
