World IN BRIEF : BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA : 3 NATO Soldiers Killed in Blast
- Share via
A mine exploded in a Sarajevo stadium used by NATO troops, killing two Portuguese soldiers and one Italian. Six Italians and one Portuguese were hurt in the blast, which apparently was caused when the troops accidentally triggered the hidden mine, Portuguese military officials said. The deaths were the first fatalities--apart from one suicide last month--incurred here by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization since alliance-led troops deployed to enforce the Bosnian peace agreement signed in Paris last month. In another incident, three soldiers of the French Foreign Legion were hurt in an explosion during an instruction session near Sarajevo, French NATO forces said. And three children were seriously wounded near Sarajevo front lines when they stepped on mines near buildings abandoned by Serbian forces.
