How accurately Kristine McKenna has delineated the differences between skateboarding in the 1960s and today (“It All Started So Innocently . . . Bust Your Buns, Bust Your Buns,” Jan. 28.) Yes, those old steel-wheeled contraptions were dangerous. (I vividly recall “eating it” quite seriously once, after losing a truck on a long downhill stretch.)
And yes, it was illegal in many places. (The tickets handed out in Sierra Madre were actually quite amusing. “Speed: 5 mph. Make of vehicle: Flex-flyer.”)
And yes, “taking gas in a bush . . .” did take a lot of nerve. Thanks for the memories.
