Calabasas Stakes Claim on Trosper’s 1-Hitter

CALABASAS — Tanner Trosper could have yelled, pumped his fists or jumped onto the shoulders of his auspiciously named catcher, Josh Goldfield.

Surprisingly, the Calabasas High pitcher showed no special emotion after he pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 4-2 victory over El Camino Real on Thursday in a San Fernando Valley tournament pool-play game at Calabasas.

Boy, did he have reason to celebrate.

It was the first victory for the Coyotes (1-1-1), ranked eighth in the region by The Times, and it came against No. 4 El Camino Real (3-1), the City Section power only a few miles away from Calabasas.

Members of both teams had played together at West Hills Little League.

But Calabasas had always been the other school in the neighborhood until it went 25-1 last year. The program ascended as if shot out of a cannon.

Calabasas and El Camino Real hadn’t faced each other in several years. Trosper and his teammates were still hungry and anxious to prove themselves.

“It feels great,” said Trosper with a broad grin. “It was a fun game.”

The only hit Trosper (1-1) allowed was a two-run home run to losing pitcher Shaun Fishman (1-1) that gave El Camino Real a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

Calabasas cut the lead in half on Darin Reisman’s homer in the bottom of the inning.

The Coyotes, who had 10 hits, added three runs in a fifth inning that included doubles by Trosper and Brian Fatur and a two-run single by Josh Harris.

“Everyone was pumped up about the game,” Fishman said. “But they wanted this more.”
