The Navy expanded a ban on the use of engine afterburners, which help planes to accelerate to supersonic speeds, after finding evidence of overheating on an F-14 fighter jet that recently crashed. Naval safety, engineering and operations experts have been reviewing the history of F-14 accidents in the wake of a sudden spike of incidents earlier this year. Afterburners, mounted on the rear of engines, provide extra thrust by mixing additional fuel with hot exhaust air.
