Former Pepperdine Pitcher Gaspar Blows Down JetHawks

LANCASTER — The JetHawks ran into a tough pitcher and an unusually stiff wind--blowing in for the first game at the Hangar--and the JetHawks lost 3-1 to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Sunday before 5,250 fans.

Cade Gaspar, a right-hander out of Pepperdine who came to the San Diego Padre system in a trade this spring from the Detroit Tigers, held the JetHawks (16-8) to one run and five hits through seven innings.

“He was pitching well,” JetHawk catcher Scot Sealy said. “You’ve got to give him credit. He shut us down.”

Gaspar retired Sealy on a pop-up with two out and the bases loaded in the sixth, extinguishing the JetHawks’ best threat.

Jesus Marquez and Carlos Villalobos each had two of the JetHawks’ seven hits.

The JetHawks’ Chris Beck, making his first start, pitched five strong innings, allowing one run. Tim Trawick (0-2) gave up a run-scoring single to Eduardo Cuevas with two out in the seventh, breaking a 1-1 tie. Trawick allowed another run in the eighth.
