More Bankruptcy Legal Fees Weighed

The Board of Supervisors today will consider paying legal bills for three county officials who hired lawyers during bankruptcy-related investigations by the Orange County Grand Jury and district attorney’s office.
The board established a policy earlier this year directing county officials not to pay legal bills related to the investigations. But supervisors said they would consider requests on a case-by-case basis.
Today, the board will consider bills totaling $24,000 for former county Finance Director Eileen T. Walsh, $10,600 for former County Administrative Officer Ernie Schneider and $6,991for Auditor-Controller Steve E. Lewis.
Walsh and Schneider have not been accused of any wrongdoing, but Lewis faces a civil misconduct charge for allegedly failing to prevent the bankruptcy.
Earlier this year, the board agreed to pay $12,000 in legal bills for two other county employees who hired private attorneys when being interviewed by the grand jury and Securities and Exchange Commission.
