Wichita State, Rice Win Opening-Round Games

WICHITA, Kan. — Top-seeded Wichita State, with the nation’s best record at 51-9, opened play in its NCAA Midwest Regional Thursday night with a 4-0 shutout victory over Big Ten champion Indiana.
Steve Foral (11-1) gave up five hits in 7 1/3 innings before closer Braden Looper came on to hold the Hoosiers hitless in the last 1 2/3 innings.
The victory moved Wichita State into a 12:30 p.m. game today against Missouri, which lost to Rice, 17-4, earlier in the day. Indiana (42-17) meets Delaware in a 9 a.m. elimination game.
Wichita had eight hits off Dan Farrell (9-6), who walked two and struck out eight.
The Shockers scored two runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Travis Wyckoff and another on a sacrifice fly. Wyckoff doubled in another run in the second.
Rice 17, Missouri 4--Outfielder Will Ford had four hits and drove in five runs to lead Rice (40-21) to the victory. Lance Berkman and Jason Richards each had two hits.
Rice had 15 hits off four Tiger pitchers. Dana Davis (4-1) picked up the victory.
