Hoop Dreams
For more than a decade, Donna Simms has been shooting hoops and biding her time. She was waiting for a women’s pro basketball league to start up. Now, she’s 38, practically a senior citizen in basketball years. The long-awaited leagues have arrived. . . . But can Simms still realize her dream? Miles of Aisles
Although he’s logged many a mile in the aisles of Northridge Fashion Center, Mac Moren is not your typical mall rat. For one thing, he’s no teenager with an attitude. He’s an octogenarian with an attitude . . . a great attitude. He’s shared it for 10 years on his daily rounds at the shopping center. “He’s like the Mayor of the Mall,” said Pretzel n Cheese owner Esta Ruthman.
Walking the Talk
Moren isn’t all talk. Besides being a great schmoozer, the retired grocer uses the mall as a walking track. This morning, it will be a party site: Mall security director Jim Dellinger is putting on an 84th birthday party for Moren, who resorted to prowling Topanga Plaza when Northridge Fashion Center was being rebuilt after the earthquake. When the mall came back, so did he.
