Fox, Johnson Sign With Long Beach

Nate Fox, an outstanding pole vaulter from Edison High, and Cory Johnson, a talented high jumper from Los Alamitos, have signed letters of intent to attend Long Beach State.
Fox won the CIF state meet and was ranked ninth in the nation. His best vault was 16 feet 1 inch. Johnson set the Los Alamitos high jump record at 7 feet, the top mark in Orange County last spring.

Keri Phebus of Newport Beach beat Monique Javer of Hillsborough, Calif., 6-1, 6-3, in a quarterfinal match of the Toshiba Opportunity women’s tennis tournament Thursday in San Diego. Page Bartelt of Mission Viejo lost to Mugette Ahn of Los Angeles, 6-3, 6-1.

Charlie Phillips, former Southern California College baseball coach, has accepted a job as pitching coach at Biola. In six seasons at SCC, ending in 1995, Phillips was 145-154, and guided the school to four NAIA playoffs.

Jennifer Miskov, an outfielder for the El Dorado High softball team, has signed a letter of intent to attend SCC in the fall, school officials said.
